My descendants many generations from now will have difficulty tracing my movements and activities without the help of this description. (Or perhaps I flatter myself that anyone would care.)
I was born in Janesville, WI in 1950. 1511 Blaine Avenue was the address of our small, two story home. In 1958 we moved to 426 Presidential Lane on the far west side of Madison, WI. The first census I'll show up in is 1960 in Madison.
In 1969, we moved to 6016 Lake Edge Road, on the east shore of Lake Waubesa in McFarland, WI, a suburb of Madison. That's probably where I was for the 1970 census.
At the time of my first marriage in 1971, my wife and I moved into the first floor of an old house at 502 S. Mills street, within a bike ride of the University of Wisconsin campus.
When separation and divorce upset my life in 1972, I moved into a brand new apartment complex named Valley View Apartments on Fish Hatchery Road in the Town of Fitchburg just outside the city of Madison. It was there I met my second wife. After a short courtship, we got married in a very informal ceremony conducted by Judge William Sachtjen at the Monona Yacht Club. We combined the wedding and reception into a single event; interrupting the reception briefly to get married.
Within a week of the wedding, we moved to Omaha, Nebraska where I started working for IBM as a Systems Engineer. We lived in a nice three bedroom apartment on Burt Street for 11 months before moving into our first house. We had to go to small claims court to get 11/12 ths of our deposit back because we left a month early.
Our first house was 12057 Ohio Circle. Kari was born while we lived here.
In the summer of 1980, the three of us met my parents in Florida for a two week vacation. I think we were in a motel in St. Petersberg the day of the census. Part of the purpose of the trip was to attend the IBM Achievement Conference in Miami Beach. Another purpose was to check out Boca Raton to see if that was a good place to live. We moved there later the same year. 4648 Addison Street was close to the Everglades. Technically, we were in Palm Beach County, not Boca Raton.
I was fortunate enough to work on the IBM PC starting 10 months before it was announced on August 12, 1981, the day after Kevin was born.
In January of 1986 we moved to Tokyo, Japan for a two year international assignment. Most of the streets there are not named. Addresses are very difficult to decipher and locate. Suffice it to say we lived in a very nice, two story home in the Higashiyama section of Meguro-ku, between Nakameguro subway station and Ikeijieri o hashi subway station. We were close to the American School in Japan Nursery Kindergarten where Kevin went to school and Judy was President of the PTA. Kari went to the International School of the Sacred Heart, an all-girls Catholic School. It was only two stops on the subway and then a short walk. So as a first, second and third grader, Kari and her friend Nicola Jones got to school via the subway; initially with me guiding them, since I had to go on the same train to work, but very soon, all by themselves.
After two years in Tokyo, we grew accustomed to traveling around Asia and took another opportunity to work and live in Hong Kong. For two and a half years the 23rd floor of a high-rise apartment building overlooking the ocean was home. The Grand Garden Apartments were located on the south side of Hong Kong island at 61 South Bay Road, away from the business of the city. I'm not sure when exactly the 1990 census took place, but we were probably in Hong Kong and therefore would not be counted in the U.S. population.
In the summer of 1990 we visited Austin, Texas. I found a job in the IBM development lab and we bought a house at 11111 Callanish Park Drive. We moved to Austin in August, 1990 and have been here for longer than any place we've lived. In May 2002, with the kids now out of the house, we down-sized to a smaller, new home at 5327 Bull Run.
